The generosity of the new driveway was just the beginning. Soon after, we focused on other access points, purchasing ramps to overcome the slight incline into the garage/basement and to provide a smooth transition to the deck, where Hutch could soak up the sunshine. Each modification was a step towards greater freedom within our home, and slowly but surely, he regained the ability to move throughout the entire house.
As Hutch regained the ability to move around the house, our focus shifted to supporting his independence in daily activities. We sought out and found helpful items that simplified tasks like eating and using the computer. A particularly exciting addition was a "Sit to Stand" machine, which allowed him to experience the sensation of standing once more.
As we continued to adapt and find ways to make life as "normal" as possible, transportation became a key focus. Discovering a van with a ramp was a game-changer, finally allowing Hutch the independence to venture outside our home. Once we mastered the process of getting him in and out, the world suddenly felt full of potential – truly our oyster to explore.
